What would happen if you pit Leonard, Sheldon, Howard, Raj and Penny against a nuclear reactor, a mad bomber, or any other catastrophe that can be dealt with in 45 minutes? Scorpion. Stick with me on this-
Walter, aka Leonard
The most normal of the bunch, the one who has even rudimentary social skills, and the alpha of the group. He talks and the others listen. He leads and the others follow. I think you can smell what I’m shovelling. There’s also the little fact that he’s got the feels for Paige/ Penny.
Sylvester, aka Sheldon
More clinical, less socially adept, and the Robin to Leonard/Walters Batman. His intelligence is actually a help and a hinderance, as it segregates him- issues with physical contact, germs and connecting on a personal level with others. One thing he is very sure about, is his brilliance.
Toby, aka Howard
The ‘cool’ member of the group, at least in his own mind (thus the quotes, in case you missed them). He’s the one who dresses funky (note Tobys hat, Howards dickey and belt buckles), talks as street as any of them are capable of, and is constantly trying to get into a pair of panties. A fan of vices, displaying a divergent moral code than the others, his abilities are also somewhat different to the others, the ‘Mister’ instead of ‘Doctor’ of the group.
Happy, aka Raj
The one whose habits and sensibilities are less in keeping with the gender norm, as generally depicted in sitcoms. The one who doesn’t play well with others, Raj unable to speak to women, Happy to anyone. Also notably is the token Asian representative of the group.
Paige, aka Penny
The normal, hot chick. She doesn’t understand them at first, just a minimum wage waitress on the outside, brought into the mayhem and action by Walter/ Leonard. She’s learning to live in their world and bring them out of it, all with a $200 haircut (but we’re supposed to believe it’s Supercutz). Main purpose, upping the hotness factor, and providing an obvious romantic interest for the alpha geek.
Obviously, there are a few window dressings that vary; Howards mother, Paiges son, Gallo (aka Dogett… c’mon, you know you call him that in your head), the laughtrack and background music. But I stand by what I say, they’ve taken a proven product and repackaged it, maybe well, maybe not. But there it is, Leonard and his Superfriends save the world… I don’t know if that’s a good thing or not.
